Joe Paterno, RIP.

From all reports, Joe Paterno was a legendary force at Penn State for over fifty years.

He was loved, admired and respected.

He help hundreds of your men to succeed in athletics and life.

What happened?

Did he simply stay at the party too long?  Could he never let go?

Was he not confidence enough in his legacy to be able to concede that his friend and assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, was a pedophile?

From reports, Jerry Sandusky was molesting young boys for decades.  Joe worked with Jerry every day.  Is it possible that Joe never had an inkling that Jerry had a screw loose as far as young boys were concerned?

Put yourself in Joe’s shoes.  Do you think that working side by side, day by day, year by year, that you would have figured out what Jerry might be up to? At the very least …

“Yah, the guy is weird, better keep a close eye on him.”

And, even if you were clueless, when you finally found out what Jerry was doing, would you simply pass it on to someone else to handle?

Even if you are a legend, even if you have helped thousands in the past, does this in any way mitigate your moral obligation to protect the innocent today and at any time?
