You could all smile as you pass each other walking through the kitchen to the door.  You could be strangers calling yourself a family.  Or, you could make a point – as a parent you insist – that at least once a week there is a family meal shared together – that once a week, everyone goes to church as a family and then out for brunch.  And, you listen and talk, everyone is engaged in the conversation – no looking at screens allowed.

You could make a family plan to which everyone contributes.  How about everyone works 2 hours a week and the money goes into a family fund to pay for an annual trip to Disney or a cruise or whatever everyone agrees on?

How about when anyone has anything special that happens in their lives that everyone attends the event?

How about everyone reading the same book for discussion?

How about everyone playing the same sport?  Walking is OK.

If Dad works an extra 8 hours a week, that probably is not going to have a significant negative impact on the average family that watches 30 – 40 hours of television each week.

Same for teens  - if they work 15-20 a week, there is still plenty of time for homework and Facebook and being an active participant in family affairs.

Family togetherness is an attitude.

The rewards for all can be remarkable.

Snap your fingers.

Blink your eyes.

Tap your foot.

Why aren’t more people merrily living a good life?

It is easier to stop at the bar for a drink than to stop at the supermarket for a bunch of flowers.

It is easier to stick with a job you hate then to look for a new job.

It is easier to make an excuse then to help a friend.

It is easier to roll over in bed then get your lazy butt to the gym.

It is easier to watch a marathon then to run in one.

It is earlier to watch the ballgame then to help the kids with the homework.

It is easier to putter around in the garage then to get a second job to raise capital for investment.

Suck it up.  Get up and watch the rise.  Suck up the feeling of the sun or rain on your face.  Suck up the air.  Live the good life.

Little “Hunter” or Little “Maybelline” gets a B- in math and the bottom falls out of the world.

The parents rush to the teach to find out why? Why?

The teacher wants to console the parent and keep the parent from complaining to the principal.  So, next, rather than avoid confrontation, the teacher give Little ‘Hunter” or Little “Maybelline” an A-.  The teacher figures in the long run one forged grade won’t make a difference and teachers who cause waves won’t be re-hired.  As a teacher, why stand up to parents?  Why?

Little “Hunter” or Little “Maybelline” may not be “A” students in math.  They may be very good in other subjects, just not math.  They may have a lot of friends.  They may be hard working.  They may be generous.  They may be good at sports.  But, this is not recognized.  This is not enough.  THEY MUST EXCEL AT EVERYTHING.  Otherwise, how will they ever get accepted into a “GOOD” college?

Teachers cower before parents.  Administrators bend to the will of the pushy.

The pushy win.  The children lose.

Little “Hunter” and Little “Maybelline” will look great on paper.  They will feel entitled to the bounty of the world.   Unfortunately for them, in the coming WORLD economy, the kids from Serbia and Kenya with a different upbringing will feel otherwise.

Sometimes, you are just not yourself.

You aren’t operating 100% on all cylinders.

Your choice.

Do you just crank along and get slower and slower and slower?

Everyone can – and does – fall into a rut, a routine, a malaise.

If you go to the gym after work, go before work.

Force yourself to make cold calls.   Talk to people you may not like.  Run until you feel the pain.  Give $100 to a charity.    Skip lunch for a week.  Don’t watch TV or go on the home Internet for 48 hours.  Sit down with your kids.  Hug your spouse.  

Come up with your own list of things that are hard for you to do AND DO THEM.

You want to break out – escape – forge ahead.

Take notice of yourself.

You can be married to a beautiful woman but if you are a jerk, you can bet that within a few months your pretty wife is going to be calling you a jerk.

You can be a pretty new secretary but if you are a lazy screw-up, the chances are, when nothing gets done, you won’t be looking quite as good to the boss.

Let’s state the obvious.  I have hundred of videos.  I am an old man.  I am not pretty.

What do I have to offer?

How about smart, ambitious, hard working, generous, well mannered, friendly ….

I can bring a lot to the table besides “pretty.”

And, you can be pretty and still be smart an ambitious and hard working ….

For everyone, pretty can get old quickly.

So you’ve got to have a lot more going for you if you want long term success.
