17. Wear the Green Belt

Next Principle

The legend of the martial arts belt is that it starts as white, gets green, then brown and later black. With enough wear and tear, the black wears off and begins to appear white again. Yes, it is the circle of learning. The more you learn, the more you realize that you don't know.

You earn your green belt after a year to eighteen months of dedicated training. You have sweated. You have gone through several elementary tests. You've felt the force and pain of a punch or kick, probably lots of them. You've had your muscles strained. You may have gone home with a black eye.

Welcome. You have seen the tough road ahead and nothing has made you quit. You have proven to your instructor and to yourself that with continued persistence, determination and hard work, you can make it to black belt.

To wear green is to see black. You feel good.

Discipline, respect, optimism, dedication and etiquette are marks of the warriors.
