In martial arts competitions, you will see all types of flashy techniques. Competitors want to impress judgers and win trophies. This is not your objective.

Your single-minded focus is to end the violence and get away.

Here is the hard and fast rule; the showier the technique, the less useful in an actual self-defense situation. In self-defense, you want to keep it simple and direct. Think. When you spin, you turn your back on your opponent, which is almost always a bad decision. You add power to your blows from a strong base, so, why are you jumping? Keep your feet on the ground.

Regular old front punches are effective but, for most people, a strike using the heel of your palm to the chin or nose is easier, safer and more powerful. A strong kick to the shins really hurts and is really difficult to block. High kicks are easier to block.

Army hand-to-hand combat training stresses using the heel stomp. You get your enemy down and then you stomp down with all your weight. Stomp on the arm, shoulder, chest, groin, heat, and legs, anywhere. It isn't pretty. This is life or death. The heel stomp is simple and effective.

Keep it simple. If you have one good hand strike, one good low kick combined with a warrior's mindset, you are a tough, dangerous person.

Stop being afraid of making mistakes and getting hurt.
