Previous Principle

33. Be Safe on Public Transportation

Next Principle

Be mindful of your dress, your possessions and transportation schedules. Travel unencumbered.

Waiting for your train or bus or taxi, stand with a group in a lighted area. Wait in a nearby shop.

On a bus or train, you do not want to get blocked in so choose an aisle seat. You will have a better view of what is happening. As always, stay alert. Immediately scan for the exits. If available, sit near the driver or a door. This should become habitual. Especially during non-peak hours, your choice is a train or bus with lots of other occupants. However, be aware that overcrowded transportation is the preference for pickpockets.

If you sense danger from a boisterous or argumentative passenger, do not engage him; move to another seat or car. Bus drivers are not law enforcement. Be prepared to protect yourself.

Never take a gypsy taxi. If you have the time, better to call a cab than hail a cab. Upon entering a cab, verify the identity of the driver. Put on your seat belt.

They have guns. We have guns.
