7. Get Along

Next Principle

Everyone doesn't love you. They don't love you for all kinds of reasons you can't do anything about: you're blond, black, short, tall, speak with an accent, you're smart or not, you're too good looking or not. And, there are some who will not like you because of your political affiliation, religion or your favorite sports teams.

The Navy Seals may not like because you are a pacifist. Cattle ranchers may not like you because you are a vegan. Atheists aren't going to like you if you proselytize outside their meetings.

You're just going to have to find a way to get along with all different sorts of people. Mindfully, it is very difficult to change others. You can change how you view and react to others. Sometimes, you can exert your authority but more often you're going to have to learn to use your persuasive abilities and your tact and charm. Getting along is self-defense against the outrageous fortune of bigotry, misogyny and plain old stupidity.

Accept. Find your own way. Be yourself. Let the comment pass. Smile. De-escalate. Walk away. Be calm and breathe.

In the midst of the turmoil of modern life, find peace within yourself.
