26. Be Safe at Work |
|
Violence in all forms must never be tolerated in the workplace. Employers must take all employee threats seriously. This includes threats against the company, fellow employees, vendors or customers.
Psychos rarely just snap. There are warning signs. Remember that most substance abusers, individuals suffering from mental illness and criminals are employed. Go with your instincts and intuition. If trouble did break out, whom among your fellow workers could you count on for support? If you work at night are escorts or taxis provided? Is public transportation available? Is secure parking provided?
As a supervisor, you realize that there is a big difference between a young secretary crying at her desk over a broken heart and a woman who has a restraining order against her stalker husband who has threatened to kill her. Overlook one while you document and are prepared to face the other.
Don't leave your checkbook in your desk. Keep your pack, wallet, keys, or other valuable items with you or locked up. When you make cash deposits, change your route and times. Avoid being predictable. Be aware of temporary workers: clerical, maintenance and construction. Shred office memos, emails, business letters and bills. Report any broken lights, windows or locks to maintenance.
Know your escape routes. Don't walk through dark stairwells or corridors by yourself. Make sure people know where you will be at all times. Mark all of your personal belongings. Don't openly broadcast your social and vacation plans.
Thought, preparation and commitment can save you.
